Success for Sophie
This year’s North Wales Championships proved to be a success for Sophie Reay as in her one chosen event, the 200m Breaststroke, she produced a personal best by 5.57s (3:15.52) in qualifying seventh for the final and then went one better in the final itself claiming sixth place!
The event was held in Llandudno over two weekends (4th to the 12th February) and with a number of the very best swimmers in North Wales taking part there was plenty of tough competition for the young Ruthin Rays. During the competition ten of our swimmers competed in a variety of events. With five of our younger swimmers (9/10 year olds) competing at the Championships for the first time prospects look bright for the future. Erin Evans, Hanna Roberts, Mali Beech, Megan Shutt and Rhodri Williams all had a go at distances longer than their usual competitive events and produced some fine swims. Megan took part in five swims, with her best result being
ninth in the 200m backstroke and Mali was eleventh in the 100m breastsroke.  In the older age groups there was Sophie’s singular success, whilst Alissa, Aaron, Craig and Oliver all competed well, again producing some good PB’s. Aaron produced five PB’s in five swims, his best result coming in the 100m backstroke, a ninth place. Meanwhile Oliver also had a 100% PB record with two out of two. His best being tenth in the 100m breaststroke! Craig’s best result was seventh in the 400m freestyle, finishing in a PB of 4:54.37s, an improvement of 6.27s. Alissa also put in three good swims with her best being a ninth place in the 200m backstroke.  So no medals on this occasion but good experience for our younger swimmers and plenty of improvements from our more senior ones!
